Ep. 005 | Mentors & Coaches

In this episode we discuss the challenges of being a new teacher, including the high attrition rate and the need for better support. They suggest improving pay, addressing social-emotional needs, and celebrating teachers’ accomplishments to retain them. Additionally, they highlight the importance of a positive school culture and effective mentoring programs.

The current induction process for new teachers in Colorado, which includes monthly meetings and CLDE classes, is overwhelming and could be streamlined. Mentoring is valuable for new teachers, especially when it comes to communicating with parents. The lines between mentoring and coaching can be blurred, but mentors should focus on being supportive partners rather than providing direct instruction.

Coaching in education focuses on building teacher capacity through academic content, teaching practices, and strategies. A coaching cycle typically involves pre-observation meetings, lesson observation or co-teaching, and data-driven feedback. Effective coaching involves setting achievable goals, utilizing high-leverage teaching practices, and providing constructive feedback to support teacher growth and improve student performance.

Mentoring and coaching are valuable for teachers, providing support and guidance. Reaching out to colleagues or mentors is important, especially on challenging days.
