Ep. 006 | Special Services
In this episode Malorie discusses her experience navigating the special education system for her son. She explains the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which provides services for children with disabilities from birth to age 21. Malorie highlights the importance of language and advocates for calling out bias, sharing her experience with an elderly teacher who used the word “normal” to describe her son.
The IEP process involves a referral, evaluation, and annual meetings to develop a service plan. Parents should read the draft plan before the meeting and consider hiring an advocate to ensure their child receives necessary services. Accommodations, such as visual models and repeated directions, are tailored to the child’s needs and can be beneficial for all students.
Gifted education varies by state, with Colorado using ALPs (Advanced Learning Plans) and Virginia utilizing TAG (Talented and Gifted) programs. While some states mandate gifted education plans, others focus on providing services. Twice-exceptional students, identified as gifted and with a disability or health impairment, require specialized support to meet their unique needs.
A 504 plan is for individuals with impairments that limit major life activities, such as self-care and learning. It can be beneficial for college and the workplace, as IEPs end at 21.
